(Yicai) Feb. 19 -- Chinese blockbuster Ne Zha 2 has become the highest-grossing animation film of all time at the worldwide box office after surpassing Walt Disney Pictures' Inside Out 2.
Ne Zha 2's takings exceeded CNY12.3 billion (USD1.7 billion) yesterday, according to data from ticketing platform Beacon. The movie has consistently outperformed new releases in China since its premiere on Jan. 29, topping the country’s daily box office for 21 straight days.
So far this year, China’s box office revenue has exceeded CNY20.3 billion, with this month's figure topping CNY14 billion thanks to Ne Zha 2.
Ne Zha 2 screenings have seen an average attendance rate of 33 percent this month, data from another ticketing platform Maoyan showed. In comparison, Detective Chinatown 1900 ranked second at 22 percent.
On Feb. 10, a screening of Ne Zha 2 at the Oscar Cinema in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou drew 1,404 viewers, making it the highest attendance for one showing of the flick, according to Maoyan. The movie has also taken over theater's daily schedules, with the Yinxing International Cinema in Hebi, Henan province, showing it 104 times on Feb. 4.
