(Yicai) Aug. 7 -- Following hot on the heels of China Eastern Airlines, Juneyao Airlines said it also plans to make wi-fi services available on some of the low-cost carrier’s planes for the entire duration of the flight.
Juneyao aims to complete the retrofit and testing of full in-flight wi-fi on six wide-body Boeing 787 Dreamliners by the end of this month, the Shanghai-based company announced through WeChat on Aug. 5.
At the start of this year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a notice revoking a 2018 rule that in-flight internet services can only be offered above 3,000 meters. Since then airlines have begun to retrofit and upgrade the wi-fi on their planes.
Juneyao passengers will be able to connect their own devices to the Dreamliners’ wi-fi throughout the entire flight, with internet access speeds similar to fourth-generation mobile phone connections, the company said.
China Eastern also said recently that it had completed the retrofit and upgrade of the air-ground inter-connection systems on 21 of its wide-body jets as of Aug. 4. It wrapped up the country’s first test flight with wi-fi from take-off to landing on July 28, the Shanghai-based firm said.
More than 60 percent of business class customers and over 30 percent of economy class fliers on Juneyao’s wide-body planes use the on-board wi-fi for work and pleasure, according to its own data. For long-haul international flights, those figures reach 75 and 60 percent, respectively.
