(Yicai Global) Jan. 18 -- The official closing quote valued a dollar the same as 6.4325 onshore yuan yesterday, making the Chinese currency the strongest it has been against its US counterpart since December 2015.

Their mid-rate was 6.4335 yesterday, representing an increase of 37 points over the previous trading day. The yuan had previously gained on the greenback, with an exchange rate of 6.4185, before the Chinese currency became volatile due to the rebound of the US Dollar Index.

The periodic advantages of the dollar have faded, and it will likely fall in the midterm, Barclays Bank said. The rebound of the US Dollar Index was merely a pause in the downward trend, Brown Brothers Harriman said.

The yuan has risen on the dollar this year. Their interplay will continue to be an indicator of the foreign exchange market, participants said. Periodic appreciation of the yuan will not change the main tendency of the stable exchange rates, they said.

China's economy may grow steadily and slowly this year, and the yuan is unlikely to change the situation of unilateral appreciation. The dollar's trajectory remains uncertain. The forex market is confronting volatility this year, an expert said.
