Yuan-Dollar Central Parity Rate Hits 27-Month High on Weak Greenback Yuan-Dollar Central Parity Rate Hits 27-Month High on Weak Greenback

(Yicai Global) Jan. 25 -- The central parity rate of the yuan against the dollar hit a 27-month high of 6.3724 today on a weak greenback.

The offshore and onshore yuan both showed strength against the US currency, hitting their highest levels since November 2015. The onshore exchange rate was 6.3395 at 10:42 am today, while the offshore one was 6.3388

"Obviously a weaker dollar is good for us as it relates to trade and opportunities," US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in Davos, where he is attending the World Economic Forum. He added that the US is not concerned about its currency's short-term value.

"Longer term, the strength of the dollar is a reflection of the strength of the US economy and the fact that it is and will continue to be the primary currency in terms of the reserve currency," Mnuchin said.

The US Dollar Index continued its decline and fell below 89 after Mnuchin made his comments.

With the dollar slipping and the yuan showing its resilience, the yuan's gains will likely continue, an insider said.
