Yield Per Unit Area of Super Hybrid Rice Sets World Record 1,150 Kilograms Yield Per Unit Area of Super Hybrid Rice Sets World Record 1,150 Kilograms

(Yicai Global) Oct. 16 -- The yield per unit area of fifth generation of super hybrid rice selected and cultivated by Yuan Longping and his team reached an output of 1,149.02 kilograms per unit area (17.2 tons per hectare), thus creating a new world record for the highest output per acre of rice.

Yuan, who is an academician with the Chinese Academy of Engineering, is also known as the Father of Hybrid Rice.

The hybrid rice passed the quality acceptance on Oct. 15 at the Demonstration Area of Super Hybrid Rice in Silicon Valley Research Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology, Hebei Province . The planting area of the super hybrid rice reached 15 acres, and experts randomly selected three pieces of the area for acceptance. The cultivated area of the three pieces is 0.47 acres, with a yield per unit area reaching 1,149.02 kilograms, Science and Technology Daily reported.

Song Chunfang, a researcher with China National Hybrid Rice R&D Center, predicted that the theoretical output per one-sixth acre of the demonstration area can reach 1,357.4 kilograms.
