(Yicai Global) May 25 -- Once a leader in the Chinese handset market, Xiaomi Inc. is no longer one of the top five mobile phone retailers in the country. Only 10 million units were sold in the first quarter of this year, down 30 percent year-on-year, according to May sales statistics.
Samsung Electronics Co., Apple Inc. and Huawei Technologies Co. remain the top three firms in terms of global shipments, while Xiaomi ranks below two other Chinese handset brands Oppo Electronics Corp. and Vivo Electronics Corp., according to a report by global market intelligence firm IDC Research Inc.
The rapid decline in Xiaomi cell phone sales heralds the debunking of a myth, reported Economy and Nation Weekly, a magazine owned by Xinhua news agency.
Xiaomi postponed the rollout of its flagship product Xiaomi 5 twice last year to ensure that its product incorporated the Snapdragon chip. The manufacturer's disregard for offline sales channels and over-reliance on e-commerce has meant that it has missed its opportunity to stage a comeback.
Xiaomi's current products have no distinguishing characteristics and are unattractive to buyers, according to the report.
