Xiaomi Joins Wireless Power Consortium, May Add Wireless Charging to Upcoming Mi 7 Smartphone

(Yicai Global) Sept. 22 -- Xiaomi Technology Co. has joined the Wireless Power Consortium to become the first smartphone company supporting wireless charging in China.

Xiaomi will release its wireless charging technology in its flagship series of Mi phones. The Mi 7, debuting in the first quarter of next year, is set to be equipped with the feature, TechWeb reported on Sept. 21.

The Wireless Power Consortium is the first industry organization for wireless charging. It formulated the industry-wide standards for low power consumption applications and products, Qi. The Qi logo is placed on products that adhere to the consortium's standards.

Wireless charging technology will become a requirement for future smartphones, and unified standards will help manufacturers create cross-compatible products.
