Xiaomi Joins Samsung to Become India's Top Smartphone Brand

(Yicai Global) Nov. 16 -- China's electronics and software company Xiaomi, Inc. tied with South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. [KRX:005930], with a market share of 23.5 percent, thus becoming India's top smartphone brand together with Samsung in the third quarter of this year, The Times of India reported yesterday.

The shipments of smartphones of Samsung and Xiaomi increased by 23 percent in the third quarter, but nearly 300 percent year-on-year, respectively, with the latter's shipment reaching 9.2 million sets in the same quarter, showed data by IDC, a market intelligence and advisory services firm.

In the future, both Samsung and Xiaomi will enhance construction of further channels and differentiate their products from others with cutting-edge technologies and good quality to deal with the fierce competition in the Indian market, said Upasana Joshi, senior analyst with IDC India.

In the third quarter of this year, the shipment of smartphones in India reached a record high of 39 million sets, up 40 percent over the second quarter, representing a 21 percent growth compared with the same period last year.
