(Yicai Global) Sept. 20 -- Chinese passenger airline XiamenAir has set up a Shanghai office in order to better service the Yangtze River Delta region -- an economic hub in the east responsible for about a fifth of China's annual gross domestic product.

The Fujian province-based firm set up the regional branch, its eighth location in the country, yesterday to became the third domestic carrier to do so behind Air China and China Southern. It intends to have 15 aircraft based in Shanghai next year, before building up to 33 planes carrying 7 million travelers a year by 2025 and eventually having more than 50 jets deployed in the city.

Setting up the Shanghai office will allow XiamenAir to manage its own fleet in Shanghai and facilitate the opening of more international and domestic routes from the eastern metropolis, with a particular focus on the Yangtze River Delta Economic Zone. The region includes Shanghai and neighboring provinces Anhui, Jiangsu and Zhejiang.

Shanghai is a major travel hub in China, providing an endless supply of both business and leisure travelers for airlines to compete over. The local market is primarily dominated by China Eastern, which is based in the city and alongside affiliate Shanghai Airlines commands about 40 percent of the market.

XiamenAir already has routes set up from Shanghai to many Chinese cities, such as Beijing, Shenzhen and Tianjin, and plans to strengthen these links and add new routes now the new office is up and running. It also hopes to build links with airports across Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, Europe and the Americas from 2021 through 2025.

The firm's most popular routes now are between Xiamen and Fuzhou, capital of Fujian. It has branches in both cities as well as offices in Hangzhou, Beijing, Tianjin, Hunan, Quanzhou and Chongqing, but plans to set up more around the Yangtze River Delta in future.
