Wuhan Cuts Gas to Commercial Users in City to Preserve Residential Supply Amid Shortage Wuhan Cuts Gas to Commercial Users in City to Preserve Residential Supply Amid Shortage

(Yicai Global) Dec. 8 -- Wuhan drastically cut gas supplies to commercial users yesterday in order to preserve a steady household supply following an upstream shortage affecting the city, located in central China's Hubei province.

The city's government worked with local suppliers including PetroChina Co. [SHA:601857] and Wuhan Natural Gas Co., to suspend gas supplies used for heating for almost 300 industrial and commercial units, as well as public institutions (excluding schools and hospitals) following a shortage of 1.5 million cubic meters resulting in pipe system pressure falling to 0.9 megapascals, local media outlet Changjiang News reported.

China has experienced nationwide challenges in imbalances between the supply and demand of gas this year, resulting in many places such as Wuhan facing shortages. Local supplier Wuhan Natural Gas expects the gap to worsen, which could affect household gas supplies and people's heating in the future.

The local utility has called on users to choose alternative energy sources like electric power, and use natural-gas heating only at night or less frequently. Wuhan Natural Gas recommends customers not use several gas-based appliances simultaneously and to avoid prolonged usage during the peak hours of 11:00 am and 6:00 pm.
