(Yicai Global) Sept. 11 -- The world-renowned quantum scientist Professor Shi Yaoyun will join Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd [NYSE:BABA] to serve as chief scientist of quantum technology at the group's Alibaba Cloud Computing Ltd.

Professor Shi will be responsible for setting up Alibaba Cloud quantum research team, providing quantum cryptography protection to all users, China's information social platform AI Era reported today. Quantum cryptography follows accurate physical laws and its security is not available in traditional cryptography, Shi said.

Shi taught at Michigan University in the US and has won the honorary professor of life title at the university. He has also been honored “Career Award” by the National Science Foundation. His research includes quantum algorithms, quantum communications, quantum information and quantum cryptography, public information shows.

Shi is another top scientist joining Alibaba since Alibaba launched its NASA program in March 2017. In June this year, Wang Gang, a former lifetime tenured professor at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, joined Alibaba’s artificial intelligence laboratory and Ren Xiaofeng, former senior principal scientist at Amazon.Com, Inc.[NASDAQ:AMZN] served as chief scientist at Alibaba’s Institute of Data Science & Technologies.

Alibaba began its research on quantum communications in 2013 and established quantum computing laboratory jointly with the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2015, making the group the first Chinese technology firm vigorously devoted to quantum information science.
