The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The three pillars of the treaty are nuclear disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation and peaceful use of nuclear energy. The current general trend is to reduce the number of nuclear weapons worldwide, but the recent trend of increased nuclear weapon production goes against the three pillars of the treaty.
The world lost valuable barriers when the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty expired last year. North Korea has stagnated and the regional arms race between India and Pakistan is continuing to heat up. The disagreement between pro-nuclear and non-nuclear states is also deepening.
For these reasons, the 2020 Review Conference is likely to adjourn without consensus documents, as in previous conferences.
