Will China Join CPTPP Negotiations? Will China Join CPTPP Negotiations?

No.

The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, which now includes 11 member states, originated from the Trans-Pacific Partnership and is the largest free-trade zone in the Asia-Pacific region and the world's third-largest FTZ. The CPTPP officially started on Dec. 30, 2018, since which the agreement has contributed 13 percent to global economic growth and has made up 27.3 percent and 27.5 percent of the world's total exports and imports, covering a population of 500 million people. Colombia, Indonesia, Korea, the United Kingdom, Thailand and other nations have asked to join the CPTPP.

China will not consider joining the CPTPP this year as it is focusing on other trade agreements and doesn't want to lose manpower in its negotiations. 15 members of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, which includes China and Japan, hope to finish the legal agreement review process by June and formally ink the agreement in November; and China, Japan and Korea are also discussing a tri-lateral free trade agreement.
