Wang Jianlin Remains China's Richest Man, Dark Horse Yao Zhenhua Shoots to 4th on Hurun Rich List

(Yicai Global) Oct. 13 -- Chinese property magnate Mr. Wang Jianlin and his family have topped the Hurun Rich List for the third time with wealth of CNY215 billion (USD31.97 billion). Dark horse Mr. Yao Zhenhua shot up 200 places to 4th place on the back of a nine-fold increase in his fortune to CNY115 billion.

The 18th Hurun Rich List was released today in association with Forest City, a large-scale property development by Country Garden Pacificview in Iskandar Malaysia. It now includes 2,056 individuals with fortunes over USD300 million.

Low-profile Mr. Yao, chairman of financial conglomerate Shenzhen Baoneng Investment Group Ltd., made headlines this year for his hostile takeover of China's largest real estate enterprise China Vanke Co. "His wealth increased by CNY2 billion per week over the past year," Mr. Rupert Hoogewerf, Hurun Report chairman and chief researcher, said.

There were little surprises in the top three places. Mr. Wang, chairman of Dalian Wanda Group Co., one of China's biggest private property developers and the world's largest cinema chain operator, retained his title as China's richest man for the third year running. Alibaba Group Holdings Ltd. founder, 52-year-old Mr. Jack Ma retained second place despite a 41 percent increase in his wealth to CNY205 billion. 45-year-old Mr. Pony Ma of Tencent Holdings Ltd. was up one place to third, with a fortune of CNY165 billion despite giving away USD2.1 billion in the past year.

Almost a quarter of the rich list were female, up three percentage points to 24 percent from last year. Of these, 60 percent started from scratch. 'Beijing Real Estate Queen' Ms. Chen Lihua is China's richest woman with CNY50.5 billion, ranking 20th.

Some 68 entrepreneurs born after 1980s are on the list, 12 more than last year. Of these, 21 started from scratch, five more than last year, and mainly work in the IT industry. Husband and wife team Wang Qicheng and Wu Yan, founders of investment research business Hakim Unique Group, became the richest of 'the post-80s generation' who started from scratch.

Drone King Wang Tao, founder of China's leading drone maker DJI Technology Co., ranks 77th on the list with CNY24 billion.
