(Yicai Global) Sept. 11 -- Some imported underwear of Victoria's Secret were found to contain high levels of formaldehyde, a Chinese online media outlet reported. However, such products have already been destroyed, an employee of the company told thecover.cn.
Victoria's Secret's products now sold in China are all compliant with the relevant standards, and those non-compliant products have been destroyed by the customs bureau, online media outlet thecover.cn learned from an employee of the company.
"Victoria's Secret's factories are located in a number of countries. The customs agency will check products when they are imported, and products that contain higher amounts of substances than the set standards will be destroyed directly. That batch of non-compliant products have already been destroyed," the employee said.
China's state-owned broadcaster CCTV reported earlier that Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau seized a batch of substandard imported clothing including some products of international brands such as Ralph Lauren and Victoria's Secret.
The five batches of Ralph Lauren clothing seized by the Shanghai bureau had high pH levels and problematic children's clothing buttons and ropes, while one batch of Victoria's Secret underwear contained too much formaldehyde.
The customs bureau destroyed some 400 batches of substandard clothing worth over USD300,000 on the day CCTV reported the news.
China's textiles safety regulations clearly prescribe that formaldehyde contained in products with direct contact with human skins must be less than 75 milligrams per kilogram.
Victoria's Secret said in late August that the 2017 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show will take place in Shanghai, China in November, marking the first time that the fashion show will take place in Asia.
