(Yicai Global) June 12 -- Perfect World has got the license from US web game developer Valve to create a Chinese platform to bring overseas Steam games to the country.
Perfect World and its Shanghai unit have entered into a licensing agreement with the Washington-based game maker, said the entertainment products developer in a statement today.
Steam is a digital distribution platform developed by Valve and offers multiplayer gaming, digital rights management, video streaming and social networking services. It is one of the largest digital distribution platforms for PC gaming in the world.
Under the deal, Perfect World will establish, operate and market Steam China on the Chinese mainland, and Valve will provide software licenses and related technical support and authorize Perfect World to use its trademark and publicity materials to promote the games, the statement said.
Perfect World will be responsible to introduce and localize Steam games to the Chinese market and recommend and support the release and operations of Chinese games on the Steam China platform, per the statement.
The Chinese company will make an upfront payment in cash to cover license fees, and Valve will tally up the costs based on revenues using the agreed calculation method, it said.
Valve is a leading global game developer and owns Steam, where players can buy, download, discuss, upload and share games and relevant products. More than 20,000 gaming products from different countries and regions have been released via the platform to date, the statement added.
