(Yicai Global) Sept. 18 -- Universal Studios plans to open a new theme park in Beijing in 2021 that will replace its Hollywood destination as the entertainer's largest amusement park on the planet.
Universal Studios Beijing will boast seven main areas themed around Hollywood, Transformers, Jurassic Park, Waterworld, Harry Potter, Kung Fu Panda and Despicable Me, news site The Paper reported today. It will also house the first two Universal-themed hotels: Universal Studios Grand Hotel and the NUO Resort Hotel, according to a Sept. 3 statement from the park's operator.
The park will be a key part of the Universal Beijing Resort in the Chinese capital's Tongzhou district. Beijing International Resort, a joint venture between Beijing Shouhuan Cultural Tourism Investment and Universal Parks & Resorts, owns the development. The former is run by five state-backed Beijing companies and holds 70 percent of the subsidiary.
"The Universal Beijing Resort will include Chinese animation, film, art, cultural creation and other cultural business parks as well as acting-themed towns, combining advanced US them park development patterns with Chinese elements," said Duan Qiang, chairman of Beijing Tourism Group, which part owns Shouhuan Cultural Tourism Investment.
California-based Universal Studios began the project, the fifth of its kind in the world and the third in Asia, in 2014. It has existing parks in Hollywood, Orlando, Osaka and Singapore.
