Unistrong, CAAC Team Up to Build Beidou-Based Airport Management Tech Unistrong, CAAC Team Up to Build Beidou-Based Airport Management Tech

(Yicai Global) April 26 -- Satellite navigation and positioning services provider Unistrong Science & Technology has joined hands with the Civil Aviation Administration of China to build a high-precision airport management system using the country's homegrown Beidou Navigation Satellite System.

The Beijing-based firm and the Second Research Institute of the CAAC have agreed to develop technologies that can manage moving targets, facilities and equipment at airports using the third-gen Beidou system, Unistrong said in a statement on April 24. The technologies will mostly be used for airport operations and management, air traffic control, low altitude surveillance and emergency rescues.

Beidou is the Chinese equivalent to the United States' Global Positioning System, or GPS. It launched its first satellite in 2000 and began launching third-gen equipment into orbit in 2015. The third-gen service began offering global services at the end of last year and is expected to be fully complete -- with 35 satellites in orbit -- by 2020.

The pair will apply for financial support from national and civil aviation technology funds and try to secure cash and policy incentives from national and industry administrative agencies to help develop the new tech.

Based in China's southwestern city of Chengdu, the Second Research Institute focuses on design, research and development of civil aviation systems for information management, air traffic control, logistics, aviation safety and radars, the statement added.
