Typhoon Trami Ravages China's Hainan Province With More Heavy Rain Typhoon Trami Ravages China's Hainan Province With More Heavy Rain

(Yicai) Oct. 31 -- Typhoon Trami recently hit China's southern Hainan province and has caused severe damage in multiple areas due to persistent rain.

According to data from Hainan's meteorological bureau, some 65 villages and towns in 11 cities and counties in Hainan had a rainfall of over 200 millimeters between 8 a.m. on Oct. 29 and 8 a.m. yesterday.

Trami has brought heavy rain to Hainan since Oct. 28, and combined with last month's typhoon Yagi, the second-most powerful storm to ever hit China, will likely drag down the island's second-half economy.

The city of Qionghai suffered prolonged heavy rain, while the Wanquan river dam in Jiaji town was inundated and flooded many farmlands and houses, according to Hainan media.

More than 1,400 residents in Shibi and Xialang, two villages in Qionghai's Shibi town, and Mo, a village in Boao town, are surrounded by floods, with ongoing disaster relief and rescue operations.

Vehicles and pedestrians could not use Qionghai City's Wanquan river road after it was covered by over half a meter of water yesterday morning. A resident in Qionghai said to Yicai that her home was surrounded by water at noon.

The heavy rain has also caused severe losses to agricultural production.

A local farmer told Yicai he had just planted lychee, but the seeds were submerged in water.

Yagi, which made landfall in Hainan on Sept. 6, led to economic losses of almost CNY80 billion (USD11.2 billion), according to official statistics. No data regarding the damage caused by Trami has been disclosed yet.
