[Two Sessions] Xiaomi's CEO Suggests More Innovation, Better Regulation of AI, Self-Driving Cars in China [Two Sessions] Xiaomi's CEO Suggests More Innovation, Better Regulation of AI, Self-Driving Cars in China

(Yicai) March 4 -- Lei Jun, chief executive of Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi and deputy of the National People's Congress, made several proposals mainly focusing on China boosting innovation and regulation of artificial intelligence and autonomous driving vehicles.

China should promote large-scale testing and verification of self-driving cars, speeding up the process of mass production and commercialization, promoting the set up of special insurance, strengthening the dissemination of safety information, and accelerating the introduction of relevant laws and regulations to clarify the legal status of such autos, Lei said on Xiaomi's WeChat account as the Two Sessions kicked off today.

The Two Sessions are the annual plenary meetings of the NPC and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, which are China's top legislative and political advisory bodies, respectively. Lai's suggestions are expected to bring new impetus and changes in the mentioned areas.

Given the rapid development of the new energy vehicle sector, there is room for improvement in charging piles, vehicle hardware, and other areas, Lei noted, suggesting promoting the interconnection of charging facilities, carrying out the standardization of autos' hardware protocols, and encouraging carmakers to open up their intelligent ecosystem.

Lei also highlighted an issue with NEVs' green license plates, which lack intelligent capabilities and restrict design, hindering the growing demand for customization from the increasing number of young buyers. China should restart license plate style research, expand their intelligent functions, and run more tests to boost consumption, he said.

AI terminal devices are rapidly expanding into various fields, and their development is of great significance in stimulating consumption and promoting industrial upgrading, Lei pointed out. He proposed improving the standard system of AI terminals, strengthening industrial collaboration to build a collaborative ecosystem, and enhancing support for industrial innovation and development.

Regarding illegal infringements with "AI face swap and voice cloning," Lei suggested speeding up the legislative process of the unilateral law and upgrading the legislative level, strengthening self-discipline and co-governance in the industry, and consolidating the responsibilities of all parties, such as platforms.

Legal publicity and public vigilance and discernment should be improved to build a healthy ecosystem for the development of AI, Lei noted.
