Tibet Targets China's Highest GDP Growth This Year Tibet Targets China's Highest GDP Growth This Year

(Yicai Global) Jan. 16 -- China's less-developed regions, including the Tibet Autonomous Region and southwestern Guizhou, expect to keep on growing faster than others this year amid downgraded predictions nationwide.

Tibet has set a gross domestic product growth target of 9 percent for this year, the highest among Chinese regions, China News Service reported today, citing regional government data. Southwestern Guizhou deems to notch 8 percent. Both of them have lowered their targets by around 1 percentage point from 2019.

But not everyone downgrades. Northeastern Tianjin, a busy port city, has raised its 2020 goal to 5 percent from last year's 4.5 percent.

The central government is seeking a magic number of 6 percent growth for this year. Last year, it targeted a range between 6 percent and 6.5 percent. The National Bureau of Statistics will release the nation's official 2019 results tomorrow. A team of researchers from Renmin University of China predicts the reading to be 6.1 percent, less than 2018's 6.6 percent.

Most of China's 26 provinces and administrative regions have scaled back their 2020 goals. The economic powerhouses of Beijing and Shanghai are expected to expand by around 6 percent.

The wealthiest provinces, eastern Jiangsu and southern Guangdong, are likely to grow to the tune of 6 percent this year, both resulting in a sum above CNY10 trillion (USD1.45 trillion). In 2018, Jiangsu, which houses Nanjing and Suzhou, logged a 6.4 percent GDP boost. Guangdong, home to Guangzhou and Shenzhen, had a reading of 6.3 percent.
