'The Iconic' Becomes First Australian E-Commerce Company to Use Chinese Image Search Technology

(Yicai Global) Dec. 18 -- Alibaba Cloud Computing Co., a cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) technology company affiliated to Alibaba [NYSE:BABA], signed a cooperation agreement with the Australian online fashion and sports retailer, 'The Iconic,' making it the first Australian e-commerce company to use Chinese AI technology to implement image searches for shopping.

The image search service that Alibaba Cloud provides to The Iconic is the first AI solution provided by Alibaba Cloud to the Australian market, Xinhua News Agency quoted Ma Lei, Alibaba Cloud's general manager for Southeast Asia and Australia & New Zealand, as saying on Dec.16.

Alibaba Cloud first began to cooperate with The Iconic back in December 2016 when the Chinese firm formally launched its Australian data center in Sydney. At the time, The Iconic expressed huge interest in Big Data, AI technology, and the functions showcased by Alibaba Cloud via a Taobao, Alibaba's e-commerce trading platform, mobile client, said Ma Lei.

The Iconic is an online shopping website launched in 2011. Headquartered in Sydney and oriented to the markets of Australia and New Zealand, the website features fashion clothes and sports brands. Based on Alibaba's image search service, the website has recently introduced a "photography shopping" function.

The image search technology enables consumers to upload a picture to search for similar products. For example, if you see a beautiful dress while shopping at a shopping center, you can use the ICONIC mobile app to take a photo of the dress and upload it on the website to find similar dresses; this technology gives consumers the great experience of online shopping anytime, anywhere, said Ma Lei.

To satisfy consumers' demand, The Iconic brought in Alibaba Cloud as a third-party partner. The image search technology can quickly match offline and online commodities, providing convenience to consumers. Whether you see celebrities' clothes on social media or goods from magazines, you can find similar or recommended products with one simple tap on your phone, The Iconic says.

Alibaba Cloud will provide companies like The Iconic with cutting-edge technologies to bring the shopping experience of Australian consumers to a new level. For its part, The Iconic will provide considerable information about consumer demand and feedback to help Alibaba Cloud better adjust its solution to further adapt to the actual demand of the Australian market, said Ma Lei.
