(Yicai Global) Nov. 4 -- Tesla does not plan to site its second Gigafactory in China in the port city of Qingdao, the US electric automaker’s global vice president said in response to online speculation.
“The information circulating on the internet about the location of Tesla’s second factory is not true,” Grace Tao said via a Weibo post yesterday evening.
It was rumored online the same day that Tesla’s second production plant in China, the world’s biggest auto market, will be located in the Shandong Pilot Free-Trade Zone in Qingdao.
Founder Elon Musk has previously said that the automaker plans to build a second plant in Asia. Its first Gigafactory outside of the United States was built in Shanghai. To meet strong demand, Tesla has said that plant will increase output 80 percent to 450,000 cars this year.
“Tesla is honored to contribute to the development of China’s new energy industry and will continue to increase its investment in the country,” Tao added in her online post.
