(Yicai Global) Oct. 25 -- US electric vehicle giant Tesla Inc. [NASDAQ:TSLA] plans to hire nearly 500 university graduates in China through a new program. The move follows the firm's recent global overhaul of its workforce structure.

Tesla plans to recruit for positions in research and development, sales, after-sales, administration, engineering and information technology, as well as offering internships.

Many of the jobs are based in first- and second-tier Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Nanjing, Suzhou and Wuhan.

"The Chinese market is very important to Tesla," said Zhang Xiang, an independent automotive consultant.

The firm's China operations have attracted growing attention of late, after it opened the world's largest supercharger station at Lilacs International Commercial Center in Shanghai's Pudong New Area on Oct. 23. The facility is able to charge 50 vehicles at the same time, surpassing the record set by Tesla's supercharger station built in Beijing five months ago.

"We project Tesla's auto sales to rise from 100,000 units this year to a million units by 2022," Nomura said in a research note about the electric car maker.

Tesla has to perform well in the Chinese market to achieve such sales growth; the country will become its largest market by around 2022, the note said.

The firm still faces a number of challenges in the country. "Even in Shanghai, where Tesla drivers can obtain a free green license plate, they still need to pay vehicle purchase taxes and have no subsidies," Zhang said.

Tesla will visit Sichuan Normal University in Chengdu and then Guangdong University of Foreign Studies to hold further recruitment events.
