(Yicai Global) March 7 -- Tesla is expected to put some production lines at the US electric car giant's under-construction Gigafactory facility into operation by the year-end, state-backed news outlet Shanghai Observer reported Chen Mingbo, chairman of the Shanghai Commission of Economy and Information Technology, as saying.
Progress on the facility's construction has been smooth so far, Chen said during the annual meetings of the National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the country's top political advisory body.
Chen lauded the project as a landmark achievement for the country, adding that it only took six months to go from the signing of initial deals to breaking ground. He called it the largest foreign manufacturing project ever to land in the eastern Chinese city.
Located Shanghai's Lingang Industrial Park, the facility will boast initial weekly production of around 3,000 Model 3 sedan cars with an annual capacity of 250,000 during the first phase.
