(Yicai) Aug. 7 -- US auto giant Tesla has started recalling more than 1.68 million electric vehicles in China due to a potential safety hazard of the front trunk lid opening while driving.

Tesla is recalling imported Model S and Model X cars and China-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles produced between Oct. 15, 2020, and July 17, 2024, effective immediately, the State Administration for Market Regulation announced on its website yesterday.

The trunk latch assembly system of some recalled vehicles cannot detect that the frunk lid is open and issue a warning that it is unlocked, according to the SAMR. In extreme cases, the frunk lid may open while the vehicle is moving, blocking the driver's view and increasing the risk of a collision.

Tesla Motors Beijing and Tesla Motors Shanghai will do an over-the-air upgrade to the software of the recalled vehicles for free to fix the issue. They will also repair faulty vehicles with trunk latch problems for free to eliminate potential risks. Autos that cannot be upgraded via OTA will be recalled by contacting users through Tesla Service Centers.
