Tesla Dispatches Team to Probe Model S Blaze in Shanghai Tesla Dispatches Team to Probe Model S Blaze in Shanghai

(Yicai Global) April 22 -- Tesla has sent a team of investigators to Shanghai after a video that appears to show one of the electric carmaker's vehicles bursting into flames circulated on the internet and was reported by the media.

The team will cooperate with local authorities as they look into the blaze, the California-based company said today via its Twitter-like Sina Weibo social media account. Tesla said it understands that no one was killed or injured.

Closed-circuit television footage appears to show a Tesla Model S sedan ablaze in an underground parking lot in Shanghai at about 8.00 p.m. yesterday, according to Chinese media reports. The incident did not involve a crash and the vehicle was not being charged. The fire consumed a number of adjacent vehicles as well.

The vehicle was bought three years ago and has had no problems, Xinmin Evening News reported, citing its owner.

It is not the first time a Model S has caught fire. Last month, one burned in Guangzhou in a similar way to yesterday's. It also was not connected to a charger and was not involved in a collision. In February, a Model S crashed in the US state of Florida, resulting in a fire and claiming the driver's life. The vehicle's battery reignited several times a day after the accident.

Tesla is currently trying to promote sales of its mass-market Model 3 in China, the world's largest auto market, and Chief Executive Elon Musk was in Shanghai in January to break ground at a USD5 billion plant, the carmaker's first assembly line outside of the United States.
