Tesla Has no Plans to Use Musk’s Starlink Satellite Internet Service in China Tesla Has no Plans to Use Musk’s Starlink Satellite Internet Service in China

(Yicai Global) Nov. 18 -- US electric car startup Tesla will not install the equipment needed to run the satellite internet system Starlink, developed by its sister company SpaceX which was also founded by business tycoon Elon Musk, in the vehicles that it manufactures and sells in China, The Paper reported today.

Tesla fully complies with China’s laws and regulations, a manager at Tesla China said. All Tesla vehicles and charging stations in the country will use network services provided by Chinese carriers and all data will be stored in China.

It is also impossible for Tesla autos in China to use Starlink, which provides high-speed internet access through a cluster of satellites to even the remotest parts of the earth, as the service needs supporting receivers that must be installed in a nearby, open location, the report said.

Some charging stations in the US offer Starlink services to provide better network coverage for Tesla customers. However, in other parts of the world, California-based Tesla will need to get the necessary regulatory permissions.
