(Yicai Global) March 31 -- Tencent Holdings plans to build a artificial intelligence supercomputing center in Shanghai.

The internet titan and the city's Songjiang district government signed an deal today to deepen collaboration in areas such as AI, online news outlet The Paper reported. They will jointly build and run the new center, which will serve the Yangtze River Delta region.

The center will undertake various large-scale AI algorithm calculations, machine learning, image processing, and scientific and engineering computing tasks based on Tencent's AI capabilities, and provide cloud computing services to the whole of society with data processing and storage capabilities, the report said.

Shenzhen-headquartered Tencent will also introduce its Tencent Keen Security Lab to help develop the district's information security and help promote corresponding sectors. Tencent will also help its partners in the high-tech industry to settle in Songjiang and join in advancing AI, Big Data, cloud computing and other fields in the district, so as to spur development in the delta region.

Tencent Cloud will also help Songjiang to set up public service platforms featuring AI, carry out Smart City construction, and improve the level of services related to government affairs and people's livelihood in the district.

Tencent's AI supercomputing center and related industrial base were among a slew of big projects signed off in Shanghai today.

A big signing event for major industrial projects in the city this year, which also doubled as a promotional campaign for featured industrial parks, kicked off at the Shanghai Exhibition Center. Contracts for about 152 major projects, with a total investment of about CNY441.8 billion (USD62.2 billion), were inked, while 60 square kilometers of new space and 26 industrial parks were officially unveiled.
