(Yicai Global) Dec. 27 -- Four Chinese companies have made it into a list of the 20 most-profitable businesses per employee, reflecting China's growing financial clout on the world stage.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. [TPE:2330; NYSE:TSM] ranked ninth, the highest among the Chinese firms, with per head earnings of almost USD219,000. Business research agency Expert Market identified the top-performing firms based on data for Fortune Global 500 companies over the last financial year.

The other three Chinese businesses on the list were Tencent Holdings Ltd. [HK:0700] (14), Shanghai Pudong Development Bank [SHA:600000] (16) and Industrial Bank Co. [SHA:601166] (20).

London-based Expert Market divided each company's profit by the number of its staff. Set up in 2009, Expert Market is "a one stop shop for business resources," according to its website.

Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae), an American mortgage loan provider, topped the list with USD1.76 million per employee, followed by the biopharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences, Inc. Among tech companies, Facebook Inc. [NASDAQ:FB], Apple Inc. [NASDAQ:AAPL] and Alphabet Inc. [NASDAQ:GOOGL], the parent company of Google, were positioned fourth, seventh and eighth, respectively.
