(Yicai Global) August 21 -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, better known as TSMC, has thus far manufactured 1 billion functional, defect-free 7-nanometer chips, the Hsinchu-based firm said yesterday.
TSMC started volume production of 7nm chips in April 2018, and has made them for over 10 customers’ more than 100 models of personal computers, tablets and smart phones. Its first batch of such products included the A12 for Apple and the Kirin 980 for Huawei Technologies.
The company’s 7nm technology is also used in data centers and autos, and in performing sophisticated training and inferencing for AI, Yuan Lipei, its director of Advanced Technology Business Development, said in the statement. “With the deployment of 5G infrastructure creating stable networks for quickly sending large volumes of data, the demand for leading-edge chips to process this data will only become greater,” Yuan added.
