(Yicai Global) April 21 -- Spanish fashion retailer Mango has reportedly closed all of its physical stores in China after more than two decades in the market.

Chinese customers can still buy Mango products online, International Financial News also reported yesterday, citing an employee of the Barcelona-based firm, which designs, makes, and sells clothes, footwear, and accessories.

Mango entered the Chinese market in 2002. It had more than 200 brick-and-mortar outlets at its peak, but closed most between 2013 and 2015, with the number falling to 61. In 2019, it partnered with a Hangzhou-based apparel firm to open 16 new outlets, but halted the plans two years later to invest in the development of its online e-commerce platform.

“In terms of the Chinese market, Mango’s main problem is the lack of creativity, leading to a severe homogenization in its products and the slowed launch of new offerings, which can’t fully satisfy the younger generations’ demand for fashion items,” the report cited Cheng Weixiong, an independent analyst in the sector of footwear and clothes, as saying.

Mango will not prioritize the Chinese market over the next three years, Chief Executive Toni Ruiz told Reuters in March. It will focus on the United States and India instead, he added.
