(Yicai Global) April 22 -- Hyundai Motor will start making hydrogen fuel vehicles in southwestern China, according to the vice chief of the South Korean carmaker.

Hyundai Motor will manufacture hydrogen cars in Sichuan province, Sichuan Daily reported, citing In-Cheol Lee, the vice president of the Seoul-headquartered firm. In-Cheol did not disclose further details about the project. His companion, however, said that the plant may involve commercial vehicles rather than passenger ones.

Sichuan province ranked first in China regarding the installed capacity of hydropower last year, public information shows. Water is needed to produce hydrogen. Dongfang Electric has started building western China's first automated production line for hydrogen fuel earlier this month in Chengdu, the province's capital city.

Hyundai Motor launched the world's first hydrogen fuel cell vehicle Hyundai Tucson FCEV in 2013 to offer more clean-burning options for gasoline cars.
