(Yicai) Feb. 13 -- China’s electric vehicle battery makers built on their global dominance last year, with six ranking in the top 10, led by Contemporary Amperex Technology for the eighth year in a row.

Use of CATL's power packs in EVs jumped 32 percent to 339.3 gigawatt-hours in 2024 from the year before, according to figures released by South Korean market research firm SNE Research on Feb. 11. Ningde-based CATL remained the only EV battery supplier with a more than 30 percent share of the global market, growing it to 37.9 percent from 36.6 percent.

BYD, headquartered in Shenzhen, ranked second with a 17.2 percent market share. The six Chinese producers in the top 10 swelled their share to 67.1 percent from 63.4 percent, while that of their South Korean rivals LG Energy Solution, SK On, and Samsung SDI tumbled to 18.5 percent from 23.1 percent.

Japan's Panasonic, a major supplier to Tesla, saw its global share fall to 3.9 percent from 6.1 percent.

EV battery use worldwide surged 27 percent to 894.4 GWh, underpinned by a rise in electric car sales, which jumped 26 percent to around 17.63 million units. China’s new energy vehicle market outpaced the world, with production soaring 34 percent to 12.89 million and sales 36 percent to 12.87 million.
