(Yicai Global) March 13 -- State-backed Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Co. (SSP) will soon ship 222 kilograms of carbon fiber to South Korea in its first sale of such products abroad.

This delivery is significant because Japan, the US and Germany monopolize carbon fiber production technologies and equipment, while SSP is the only Chinese petrochemical firm capable of manufacturing such products, Chinanews.com reported yesterday.

SSP built production lines with an annual capacity of 1,500 sets of carbon fiber yarns and 500 tons of carbon fibers, as well as testing, processing and application centers in 2012. It uses entirely home-grown production technologies and has received grant of more than 60 patents.

Carbon fiber is a new high-strength fiber material. It finds wide use in the defense and civilian fields in aviation and aerospace, civil engineering, automotive materials and sporting goods. SSP lists carbon fiber among its key product this year and has fixed its sales growth targets and devised marketing strategies, the report said, adding that turnover of such products increased 60 percent annually in the first two months.
