Shenzhen Skyscraper Is Closed for Checks After Unexplained Wobbling Shenzhen Skyscraper Is Closed for Checks After Unexplained Wobbling

(Yicai Global) May 21 -- Seg Plaza, a 355.8-meter-high skyscraper in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, has been shut until further notice as inspectors investigate a mysterious vibrating of the structure that started on May 18.

No one will be allowed in or out of the Seg Plaza, the world’s tallest building made with concrete-filled steel tubular columns, until experts complete their inspection, online news outlet The Cover reported today, citing the building’s property management firm.

Property manager Shenzhen Seg’s share price [SHE:000058] closed down 3.74 percent at CNY5.41 (USD0.84) today. The company’s stock price has fallen 10 percent this week since the shaking started.

Office workers were filmed fleeing the skyscraper on May 18, when the building started to vibrate strongly. There was no sign of an earthquake, but the wind was strong, reaching Grade-5 on the Beaufort scale. The tremors continued on May 19 and yesterday forcing 90 percent of businesses to move out.

No abnormalities have been found through real-time monitoring of the skyscraper, the district government said. The main structure is safe, but more investigations are needed to find out the cause of the shaking.

Seg Plaza is in the heart of the country’s biggest electronics market, Huaqiangbei, and the continued trembling could damage hard disks and graphics cards, a market insider said.

Seg Plaza was completed in 1999, a period of building frenzy in the hi-tech hub, when one story could be completed in less than three days. Developer Shenzhen Electronics Group is one of the city’s biggest electronics product makers.
