(Yicai) Dec. 05 -- Shanghai regulators have inspected and rectified equipment at more than 10,000 local public areas, including hotels, sports venues, and supermarkets, to prevent the misuse of facial recognition technology and strengthen personal information protection.

Shanghai watchdogs have completed the self-inspection and rectification of mandatory and abusive facial recognition tech in more than 6,300 hotels, 600 supermarkets, several public sports venues, 1,200 swimming pools, and some fitness clubs, the local government announced yesterday.

In addition, the Consensus on Cooperation on Personal Information Protection among Beijing, Shanghai, Zhejiang province, and Guangdong province was also issued, proposing to thoroughly enhance the protection of personal information, promote administrative law, and explore solutions to the problem of personal information protection in the digital economy.

Shanghai's action highlighted that personal information protection is essential for the healthy and orderly development of the internet, the government said. By strengthening the data infrastructure system, maintaining the digital market order, and standardizing the new forms and models of the digital economy, the city lays a good institutional foundation for developing the digital economy, it added.

In addition, Shanghai will promote the in-depth application of data in key industries and fields based on data security, according to the government.
