(Yicai Global) Jan. 4 – Shanghai is home to the world's largest fleet of new energy vehicles (NEVs), the Shanghai local government announced. The city has now more than 100,000 NEVs, the largest NEV population among all cities worldwide. It is comparable only to Norway, Europe's top player in the NEV field.
The latest data published by the vehicle registration authorities in Shanghai indicates a total of 45,060 NEVs were registered in 2016, bringing the number of NEVs registered between 2013 and 2016 to 102,726, which Shanghai the first Chinese city to have a NEV population of more than 100,000.
License plates for traditional vehicles are auctioned in Shanghai to curb traffic congestion and the number of cars in traffic. Dubbed the "most expensive iron plate in the world," license plates are in severe short supply in Shanghai despite the discouraging average price standing at CNY 88,300 (USD12,690) as of Dec. 2016.
The Shanghai local government rolled out a series of incentives for NEV buyers such as free license plates and NEV purchase subsidies in an effort to boost the development of the new energy car market.
