(Yicai Global) Sept. 6 -- Shanghai's Pudong district police have ordered mainland China's first branch of online celebrity cake shop Lady M, originally from New York, to close temporarily after excessive queues caused chaos on the streets.

Adequate security measures were not in place at the cake maker's store in Lujiazui, Shanghai, which opened only two days before, the city's official media outlet Eastday reported.

Lady M's creations are popular among celebrity fans. Its customers are willing to pay a high price and also spend hours waiting in a crowded queue.

"Sorry, you can't buy any cakes. We sell to 300 customers a day and each customer can only buy six slices," a reporter was told at the store on Sept. 5 around noon. "If you'd like to buy a cake, please come early tomorrow and wait in the queue."

"I spent CNY436 (USD66.6) for six pieces," a customer surnamed Zhang said as he left the store. He came to queue at 06.30 a.m. because his daughter wanted the cake, but he didn't expect to be waiting six hours to buy it.

Outside the shop, scalpers were also trying to sell on the cakes at as much as CNY180 a piece.

Founded in 2004, Lady M is known as the cake brand of Chanel and Hermes, and has branches in Singapore and Hong Kong. The Shanghai store sells cake at prices ranging between CNY68 and CNY75 a piece.
