(Yicai Global) March 12 -- Shanghai may follow Beijing's lead and impose a mandatory 14-day quarantine period on all overseas arrivals as the number of novel coronavirus cases outside China continues to climb, a city official said today.

Shanghai is considering expanding the list of countries that already require quarantine, spokesperson Xu Wei said. The public will be informed immediately a decision is made, he added.

Shanghai already enforces a 14-day confinement period, either at home or in a centralized facility, for those who arrive from South Korea, Italy, Iran and Japan or have visited these countries within the last two weeks. Beijing authorities announced yesterday that all international visitors will be quarantined.

As of noon today, Shanghai had six cases of Covid-19 that had entered from abroad out of a total of 344 confirmed cases. Four of these had been living in Iran and two had visited Italy.
