Shanghai Field Tests 5G Shanghai Field Tests 5G

(Yicai Global) May 11 -- Shanghai successfully ran a comprehensive test of its fifth-generation (5G) wireless communication system in the field in its northern Hongkou district, the city's information office announced.

An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a 5G-communication technical module hovered in Hongkou's North Bund area yesterday, successfully achieving the shooting and transmission of 360-degree panoramic videos in high definition based on 5G-network transmission. The 5G video displays smooth HD images that do not disorient those viewing it in virtual reality.

China's largest city by population has thus made significant progress in trial commercial application of 5G technology. Shanghai will complete the construction of the new generation of overall information infrastructure architecture with 5G at its core by 2020, per planning. 5G  transmits data dozens of times faster than a 4G network. It sends one gigabit of data per second, thus allowing the 10-second download of a 10-GBit HD movie.

Its 5G network will let Shanghai hasten smart driving, medical treatment and manufacturing and other new applications. The city is clearly committed to remaining at the forefront of evolving technologies.
