Shanghai Disney Resort's First Expansion Project Will Be Up and Running Next Year Shanghai Disney Resort's First Expansion Project Will Be Up and Running Next Year

(Yicai Global) Dec. 1 -- The Walt Disney Company [NYSE:DIS] plans to expand its investment in Shanghai Disney Resort as it becomes the first Disneyland to turn a profit in its very first fiscal year.

The first expansion project at the Disney Resort will go into operation next year.

As one of the most popular tales in Disney's repertoire, Toy Story will become its seventh theme park. Set to open before next summer, it will include three new scenic spots and one themed canteen, the Disney resort announced yesterday. One of the new scenic spots -- Woody's Round-Up -- is an exclusive project specially designed for Shanghai Disney Resort, an engineer at Walt Disney said, and the project will also include dance balls and carriage rides, with integration of multiple Chinese elements and local recreational services.

Shanghai Disney Resort's generation of profits in its first fiscal year defies previous expectations, said Walt Disney Chief Financial Officer Christine M. McCarthy, with the main sources for the park's profit coming from China's greater customer flow and lower marketing costs. Shanghai Disney Resort had received 10 million visitors as of May 19 -- 11 months after it opened to the public.
