Shanghai Brings In New Measures to Boost AI Development Shanghai Brings In New Measures to Boost AI Development

(Yicai Global) Sept. 18 -- Authorities in Shanghai have brought in new policies aimed at accelerating the development of the artificial intelligence sector in the eastern Chinese city.

The local government announced 22 new measures with a focus on talent, data and capital in the sector at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference which is being held in the city from Sept. 17 until tomorrow.

The event, which gathers together leading figures in AI from around the world, also witnessed the signing of agreements for 20 global innovation projects related to the sector. The deals included plans for eight new innovation centers with tech giants Alibaba and Baidu among the participants. The city will also develop eight AI innovation platforms which include industry mainstays such as Tencent and Huawei. US firms Microsoft and Amazon also inked agreements for the establishment of research institutes in the city.

Shanghai has prioritized attracting qualified AI talents and core teams to the AI cause and will provide protection for their innovation, entrepreneurship, work and life to give them an internationally competitive career development platform.

The talents need to obtain a work and residence permit, Gu Honghui, chief of the Shanghai's Changning district, told Yicai Global in an interview, adding that the district will provide international education or high-quality education for their children, as well as health care services. Housing subsidies will also be provided, while new apartments will be available for those who join the program early.

Shanghai will further deepen the opening up of data in key areas such as government affairs, education, medical care and tourism, and improve the supply of application scenarios covering transportation, business services and modern agriculture.

Shanghai has incorporated AI into key areas of the city's strategic emerging sectors, guiding social capital to set up a CNY100 billion (USD14.6 billion) AI development fund to provide capital and financial support for enterprises. In the future, Shanghai will build about 60 AI deep application scenarios and over 100 application demonstration projects, as well as three or four AI towns and five demonstration parks.
