(Yicai Global) Oct. 29 -- China's Comprehensive Technological Innovation Index scored 69.63, up 2.06 from last year according to a survey, the Chinese Academy of Science and Technology for Development says in a report it released today at the Pujiang Innovation Forum in Shanghai.

Shanghai and Beijing took the clear lead with the highest level of technological innovation, while Tianjin ranked third with Guangdong, Jiangsu and Zhejiang hard on its heels, thus showing up the creative force of China's eastern regions, according to the 2018 China Regional Technological Innovations Review, state media The Paper reported.
Central and Western China also honed their innovativeness. The country is gradually developing a unique multi-layered regional pattern, per the study.

The report sets first-level indicators of science and technology innovation environment, investment in and output of science and technology, high-tech industrialization, and sci-tech as a driver of economic and social development.

Mixed-Indicators

It also selected 12 second-level indicators and 39 third-level ones to combine these three layers into an index system to analyze and compare the degree of scientific and technological innovation of the country as a whole and that of 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions.

China's comprehensive technological innovation index rose by 2.06 percentage points compared with the previous year, and Anhui, Jilin, Zhejiang, Hebei, Henan and Guangdong provinces attained higher growth than the overall total.

The six provinces and cities in East China of Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangdong, Jiangsu and Zhejiang took the lead in the country compared with their showing last year. Hubei presents the best innovation strength in Central China and remains  seventh in the country. Anhui's progress is remarkable, leapfrogging four ranks to number 11.

Coordinated development of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei has achieved remarkable effects in making up for Hebei's science and technology innovation deficiencies and pushed the province up two notches over last year.

Shanghai and Beijing stand out as technological innovation centers, ranking top two in comprehensive technological innovation in this year's report. Tianjin clung to third place, with Guangdong taking fourth, Jiangsu fifth and Zhejiang sixth.

Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin rank in the top three above the country's average in terms of science and technology output, while Jilin was also up four places from last year.
