Senate Republicans Urge Trump to Reconsider TPP, But Re-Entry Might Not Be So Easy Senate Republicans Urge Trump to Reconsider TPP, But Re-Entry Might Not Be So Easy

(Yicai Global) Feb. 23 -- Republican senators in the United States have urged President Donald Trump to try and rejoin the Trans-Pacific Partnership after the remaining 11 member nations penned a new pact in preparation for an official signing on March 8 in Chile.

The remaining countries have finalized new terms and renamed the treaty as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP11, after Trump pulled the U.S. out of the deal last January.

However, trade officials in Japan and New Zealand have hinted that unless the U.S. accepts the deal as it now is, it will be difficult for America to rejoin. Trump made waves in January by attending the World Economic Forum in Davos and announcing the country doesn't rule out re-signing, if it got a better deal.

The new pact, dubbed TPP11, has suspended 22 provisions since the U.S.'s departure, with half of those relating to intellectual property. Several deferred rules concern pharmaceuticals and had been included in the agreement at Washington's request.
