(Yicai Global) Oct. 16 -- Edwin M Lee, mayor of San Francisco, met with Lu Yongzheng, vice governor of China's southwestern Guizhou province, in Guiyang recently. The pair hope to cooperate in a range of fields, including trade, tourism, technology and education.

Lee, who was born to parents from Guangdong province, is the first Asian-American mayor of San Francisco. His recent trip marks his first time in Guizhou.

The mayor visited the world-renowned liquor maker Kweichow Moutai Co. [SHA:600519], which is headquartered in Guizhou's Zunyi city, on Oct. 13. He arrived in the provincial capital of Guiyang the next day. The trip allowed Lee to see the development of transportation infrastructure in western China, he said, adding that he hopes Guizhou government can participate in the construction of high-speed railroads in San Francisco.

The cooperation between Guizhou and the US is enjoying good momentum and has huge room for development. At the meeting, Lu expressed his willingness to work more with the American city, state-run China News Service reported on Oct. 14.

Total trade volume between the Chinese province and the US reached USD600 million last year, the report added. Qualcomm Inc. [NASDAQ:QCOM], Apple Inc. [NASDAQ:AAPL] and other high-tech firms have set up branches in Guiyang, it continued.

In 2015, Lee created the citywide Moutai Day, celebrated annually on Nov. 12 to commemorate Kweichow Moutai winning the top award at the San Francisco International Fair in 1915.
