(Yicai Global) April 22 -- The world's largest smartphone maker Samsung Electronics has postponed the China release of its Galaxy Fold handset for an unspecified length of time due to alleged issues with the venue where it plans to hold the unveiling ceremony.
A more likely reason is issues with quality, as several reviewers of the handset -- already available in the United States -- have said the phone's screen has issues with swelling, flicking and simply going blank and rendering the handset useless, National Business Daily reported.
The South Korean phonemaker had planned to release the folding phone during an event at the SkyBanquet in Shanghai on April 24. The Fold has already hit shelves in New York and Samsung typically releases its flagship models in Shanghai shortly after. Both domestic and foreign media have been publishing review videos, building suspense in China for the handset's arrival.
Foldable phones are widely considered the future direction of smartphones and are attracting attention worldwide, though many critics have expressed concern about the durability and lifespan of the devices.
Samsung and China's Huawei Technologies both showed off their folding handsets at this year's World Mobile Congress behind glass covers, not allowing attendees to touch the devices.
