Sam's Club to Boost China Stores by Nearly Three-Quarters by 2022, Chief Says Sam's Club to Boost China Stores by Nearly Three-Quarters by 2022, Chief Says

(Yicai Global) June 28 -- Sam's Club, Walmart's membership-only retail warehouse, will increase the number of stores almost by three-quarters to have 45 outlets in China by 2022, according to the firm's China chief.

"We have 26 stores in China and I want to open stores in our targeted cities faster," The Paper reported today, citing Andrew Miles, the president of China business. It opened another outlet in Shanghai's Qingpu district today, raising the total number to 26 on China's mainland.

"Shanghai is our major target, and we are planning six stores there and will premiere many innovative and new products in Shanghai," Miles said.

The Arkansas-based retailer, which entered China over 20 years ago, will face tough competition from local rivals that just pushed out France's Carrefour. US Costco Wholesale, another membership warehouse, will open its first store in China in two months, only 15 kilometers from Sam's Club in Qingpu.

Sam's Club has trained an experienced Chinese procurement team which knows Chinese consumers well, Miles said, adding that this is a unique advantage in competition.

The firm opened China's first membership store in Shenzhen in 1996, later expanding to Guangzhou. Sam's Club differs from Walmart, which is also present in China, by keeping its inventory much lower at around 4,500 stock keeping units.
