(Yicai) March 10 -- Two robot dogs have joined the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area's next-generation intelligent security patrol system to keep watch over the streets in the zone.
The robot dogs began patrolling the streets of the economic and technological development zone in Beijing on March 8, the local government announced yesterday.
The smart mechanical hounds-like guards significantly improve patrol efficiency compared with traditional manual security, noted a relevant person in charge of the zone. They can also work in torrential rain, high temperatures, and other extreme environments, the person added.
In addition to regular security patrols, the robots can carry out other tasks, such as explosive ordnance disposal, while equipped with explosion-proof gear and gas detectors if necessary, the person pointed out.
The zone's next-gen smart security patrol system also includes 18 Level-4 autonomous driving vehicles, which have been on the streets since January and can complete 24-hour full coverage patrol.
This is China's first L4 autonomous patrol fleet, the person noted, adding that via the fifth-gen communication network, the robot dogs and the vehicles can exchange real-time information. The dogs are responsible for the ground patrol, while the autonomous vehicles provide material supply when necessary, and data feedback to the headquarter, forming highly efficient cooperation, the person said.
The intelligent patrol system integrates artificial intelligence algorithms and big data analysis, which can identify abnormal behaviors, fire hazards and other risks in real time, and provide early warning in seconds to the command center through the 5G network, the person pointed out.
The system then is expected to achieve a rapid "discovery-response-disposal" loop for emergencies with its database, remote calls, and emergency material delivery capabilities, the person noted.
The intelligent robot dogs will also appear at the 2025 Half Marathon and Humanoid Robot Half Marathon held in the economic and technological development zone next month, taking on the security responsibilities for the events, the person said.
