Recruiting App Apologizes for Death of User Snared in Pyramid Selling Scam Recruiting App Apologizes for Death of User Snared in Pyramid Selling Scam

(Yicai Global) Aug. 10 -- A 23-year-old college graduate, Li Wenxing, was caught in a pyramid selling scam after applying for a job advertised on an internet app. His body was recently discovered in a pond near Tianjin, putting a spotlight on safety issues with applying for jobs online. Beijing Huapin Borui Network Technology Co., which operates the Boss Zhipin app, has issued an open apology and said it will strengthen its information checks to ensure the safety of applicants.

Boss Zhipin is a free mobile recruiting app that allows executives to talk with potential employees online to expedite the interview process. More than 9.16 million job seekers and over 1.54 million executives had registered with the app as of July 31 of last year.

Chinese police arrested several directors of the involved pyramid selling group after the incident occurred. Beijing's online regulators ordered Boss Zhipin to improve content examinations yesterday.

"We did not do a good job in reviewing the job post, enabling a salesperson from an illegal pyramid selling firm to exploit a loophole and publish a fake job advertisement," Boss Zhipin said in its apology today. "We extend our deepest apology to Li's family, our users and the public, and we will assume our legal responsibilities and take corrective measures."

The company will tighten its checks of job posts and expand its manual review and big data security teams to ensure the safety of applicants.
